What is BlackBit Ransomware
BlackBit is a sophisticated strain of ransomware, first discovered in February 2023. It is a variant of the LokiLocker Ransomware, and it uses .NET Reactor to obfuscate its code, likely to deter analysis. The ransomware is built on the Ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) model, where ransomware groups lease out their infrastructure. BlackBit modifies filenames by prepending the spystar@onionmail.org email address, a victim’s ID, and appending the .BlackBit extension to filenames. For example, it renames 1.jpg
to [spystar@onionmail.org][random-id]1.jpg.BlackBit
. BlackBit Ransomware likely uses a strong encryption algorithm, such as AES or RSA, to encrypt the victim’s files, rendering them inaccessible without the decryption key. BlackBit ransomware creates a ransom note named Restore-My-Files.txt and places it in every folder containing encrypted files. The ransom note instructs victims to contact the attackers via spystar@onionmail.org. In addition to the text file, BlackBit also changes the desktop wallpaper and displays a pop-up window containing a ransom note.

As of the current date, there is no specific decryption tool available for BlackBit ransomware. Some online tools may claim to decrypt files encrypted by BlackBit, but these are often unsuccessful. It’s important to note that any attempt to decrypt your BlackBit ransomware encrypted files may cause permanent damage to your encrypted files.
The most reliable way to recover files encrypted by BlackBit ransomware is to restore them from a backup made before the infection. If no backup is available, the only other option is to pay the ransom to the attackers, which is not recommended due to the risks involved and because it encourages the criminals’ activities. It’s also worth noting that paying the ransom does not guarantee that the decryption key will be provided or that it will work.
The best way to avoid damage from ransomware infections is to maintain regular up-to-date backups. Users should also be cautious of running files from unknown sources and make sure to scan suspicious files. In the event of an infection, it’s recommended to remove the BlackBit ransomware payload file from the system using a reputable anti-malware tool. After removal, the system should be restarted to complete the process.
How BlackBit Ransomware infects computers
BlackBit ransomware is typically distributed via spam email containing infected attachments or by exploiting software vulnerabilities. Cybercriminals often forge header information in emails, tricking recipients into believing that the email is from a reputable company like DHL or FedEx. The email usually contains a narrative, such as a failed package delivery, which prompts the recipient to open the attached file, thereby infecting the computer. In some cases, the threat actor initiates the breach by employing a brute force attack, successfully compromising the user “Administrator”.

How to protect computer from viruses, like BlackBit Ransomware, in future
1. Get special anti-ransomware software
Use ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware
Famous antivirus brand ZoneAlarm by Check Point released a comprehensive tool, that will help you with active anti-ransomware protection, as an additional shield to your current protection. The tool provides Zero-Day protection against ransomware and allows you to recover files. ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware is compatible with all other antiviruses, firewalls, and security software except ZoneAlarm Extreme (already shipped with ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware) or Check Point Endpoint products. The killer features of this application are: automatic file recovery, overwrite protection that instantly and automatically recovers any encrypted files, file protection that detects and blocks even unknown encryptors.
2. Back up your files
As an additional way to save your files, we recommend online backup. Local storage, such as hard drives, SSDs, flash drives, or remote network storage can be instantly infected by the virus once plugged in or connected to. BlackBit Ransomware uses some techniques to exploit this. One of the best services and programs for easy automatic online backup is iDrive. It has the most profitable terms and a simple interface. You can read more about iDrive cloud backup and storage here.
3. Do not open spam e-mails and protect your mailbox
Malicious attachments to spam or phishing e-mails are the most popular method of ransomware distribution. Using spam filters and creating anti-spam rules is good practice. One of the world leaders in anti-spam protection is MailWasher Pro. It works with various desktop applications and provides a very high level of anti-spam protection.
