What is CiviApp
CiviApp is a term that refers to a potentially unwanted program (PUP) with malicious capabilities, often masquerading as a useful utility. It is classified as adware and a browser hijacker, and it exhibits characteristics of a Trojan Horse. This application is developed by a company named Yuif Qyus Public, which appears to be fictitious as there are no records of such a developer existing. The version number 3.3.8 is the only version known, and it seems to be a rebranding of previous browser hijackers like TruoApp and Applvl. CiviApp is designed to deceive users into thinking it is legitimate, but it primarily serves to install other malware and hijacker components on the user’s system. CiviApp is classified as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) due to its intrusive and harmful behavior. It injects advertisements into websites, redirects browser search queries, and installs unwanted applications and toolbars. CiviApp can alter browser settings, such as the homepage and default search engine, without the user’s consent, which is typical of browser hijackers. It also operates on the OS level, similar to a Trojan Horse, allowing it to perform unauthorized actions like downloading additional malware, stealing personal information, and compromising system security. The presence of CiviApp on a system can lead to severe privacy breaches, financial losses, and even identity theft.
How CiviApp infected your computer
CiviApp can infect computers through various methods. One common method is through fake applications and infected websites. Users may inadvertently download CiviApp by installing what they believe to be legitimate software or by visiting compromised sites. Another method is through bundled software, where CiviApp is included with other software downloads, often from free software repositories or grey legality websites. Additionally, phishing emails containing malicious attachments or links can also lead to the installation of CiviApp. Once installed, CiviApp can change browser settings, inject advertisements, and redirect search queries, making it difficult for users to remove it without specialized tools.
