What is JiangLocker Ransomware

JiangLocker is a recent ransomware infection. Alike other malware of this type, it is designed to restrict access to potentially important pieces of data by running secure encryption. During this process, the virus assigns all blocked data with the .jiang extension. To illustrate, a file previously named 1.pdf will change to 1.pdf.jiang and reset its original icon. Following this, JiangLocker changes the desktop wallpapers, displays a pop-up window, and creates a text note called read.ini. The text note duplicates information given inside of the pop-up window.

Cybercriminals inform victims about encryption, adding that they are the only figures able to decrypt your data. Thus, victims are asked to pay a ransom worth 0.05 BTC (Bitcoin cryptocurrency) by following the instructions provided in the text note. In addition, there are also some guidelines instructing against the usage of anti-malware software until files are fully recovered after paying the ransom. Unfortunately, it is very often true that decrypting files without the help of cybercriminals is complex or even impossible. Encryption algorithms employed by ransomware developers are strong enough to ensure no third-party software can crack it. Even so, paying the demanded ransom is not recommended since many extortionists end up scammers and do not send any promised decryption tools/keys eventually. The only best way victims can regain access to their files is to recover them with backup copies. You can also try some decryption instruments discussed in our article below, however, please note that their capability will less likely be enough to deal with “.jiang” files. If no recovery options seem to work out for you, you can save the encrypted files and hope that some working decryption tool will appear someday in the future. Before attempting any recovery method that excludes the participation of cybercriminals, it is important to delete the infection in the first order. Do so by following our guidelines below.

How JiangLocker Ransomware infected your computer

There is no single channel used by swindlers to penetrate infections like ransomware. Here are some of the most popular channels that can be involved in the distribution of ransomware – trojans, deceptive third-party downloads, fake software updates/installers, backdoors, keyloggers, botnets, system exploits, e-mail spam, and others as well. A number of successful infiltrations occur after users interact with malicious attachments or links that can be bundled within e-mail spam letters. Cybercriminals tend to impersonate the names of legitimate companies or other entities and force users into opening content attached to it. Doing so is dangerous and may lead to an unavoidable malware infection. Files with .DOCX, .XLSX, .PDF, .EXE, .ZIP, .RAR, .JS, and other extensions are often the ones cybercriminals abuse to deliver infections. While such formats have nothing to do with malware on the initial basis, cybercriminals have learned how to modify them for executing the installation of malicious infections. Therefore, you should beware of opening them and avoid downloading/browsing content on unofficial or dubious pages. Read our guide below to know how one can protect himself against ransomware and other threats in the future.
