What is Lumino_Ransom Ransomware

Lumino_Ransom is a ransomware infection designed to encrypt access to data. During encryption, it appends the .lumino_locked extension to all blocked data. For instance, a file previously named 1.pdf will change to 1.pdf.lumino_locked and become no longer accessible. In addition, the researched variant of Lumino_Ransom Ransomware also created four hundred completely empty files on the desktop (named from Lumine1 to Lumine400 in sequential order). Immediately after successful encryption, the ransomware displayed an untitled note with gradually appearing instructions (both in English and French).

La fenettre/le bloc note vas être fermée automatiquement après 20 secondes !

This note informs victims about encryption and says it is possible to retrieve a decryption password for free – by contacting cybercriminals via their e-mail address. Victims are also given only 20 seconds to memorize or copy the content of the note as it will close automatically after the time expires. We have not found any information on whether the claims made by cybercriminals about free decryption are actually true. You can give it a try yourself and see how it goes. As a rule, developers of ransomware demand victims to pay money for their decryption keys and software. It is usually not recommended to collaborate with extortionists when it comes to paying the ransom – many end up scammers and do not send any promised means of decryption. Unfortunately, decryption without the help of cybercriminals is often impossible – due to strong encryption ciphers and private keys assigned during restriction. This is the case with Lumino_Ransom Ransomware as well. Unless cybercriminals actually give the claimed decryption for free, the best option users can rely on is to recover files via backup copies. If such are available on external storage (like a USB flash card or hard drive), you can easily delete the virus and copy the data back to your system. Alternatively, you can also try some free reputable third-party decryption/recovery tools from our guide, however, we cannot guarantee that they will be able to deal with .lumino_locked files. Before trying any recovery method that excludes the participation of swindlers, it is important to get rid of the ransomware infection. Do so in our instructions below.

How Lumino_Ransom Ransomware infected your computer

A large number of ransomware infections are committed via channels like trojans, deceptive third-party downloads, fake software updates/installers, backdoors, keyloggers, botnets, system exploits, and e-mail spam letters. Cybercriminals tend to target inexperienced users whom they try to bait into executing (opening) malicious attachments or links that can be included within e-mail spam letters. To make users more motivated for opening malicious attachments, cybercriminals cover their letters under the names of legitimate companies or entities (e.g., delivery companies, tax authorities, banks, and so forth). For instance, it can be a fake message encouraging users to open a file with bill information. Unfortunately, doing so can expose you to facing an imminent ransomware infection. Files with .DOCX, .XLSX, .PDF, .EXE, .ZIP, .RAR, .JS, and other extensions are often the ones cybercriminals abuse to deliver various infections. While such formats have nothing to do with malware on the initial basis, cybercriminals have learned how to configure them for executing the installation of malicious infections. Therefore, you should beware of opening them. In addition, it is also worth-avoiding downloads of software on unofficial or dubious pages.
