What is OCEANS Ransomware

OCEANS Ransomware is a malicious software that encrypts files on the infected computer and then demands a ransom for their decryption. It is based on notorious Chaos Ransomware. Upon infection, it modifies the filenames of the encrypted files by appending four random characters to them. For example, a file named document.pdf might be renamed to document.pdf.xyiz after encryption by the OCEANS Ransomware. This use of randomly generated extensions for encrypted files is a common tactic among ransomware variants, making it more challenging for victims to identify and recover their files without the decryption key provided by the attackers. After infection malware creates ransom note OPEN_THIS.txt, where it informs that ransom amount is $124k. It also modifies desktop wallpaper.

It’s important to note that paying the ransom does not guarantee the recovery of encrypted files, as victims may not receive the promised decryption key from the attackers. Therefore, it is generally advised against making any payments to the cybercriminals. Instead, victims should focus on removing the ransomware from their system using reputable antivirus or anti-malware software and then explore alternative file recovery options. These may include restoring files from backups if available or seeking out decryption tools that may have been developed by cybersecurity researchers. However, as of the time of the article, there were no specific decryption tools available for OCEANS Ransomware, highlighting the importance of preventive measures such as regular data backups and maintaining up-to-date security software to protect against such threats.

How OCEANS Ransomware infects computers

OCEANS Ransomware typically infects computers through deceptive emails that trick users into downloading and opening malicious attachments. These emails are crafted to appear legitimate and may mimic the communication style of known organizations or contacts, thereby increasing the likelihood of the recipient opening the attachment. Once the malicious attachment is opened, the ransomware is executed on the user’s system, initiating the encryption process of the files.
