What is Pagar Ransomware
Pagar is a ransomware program that infects Windows systems to encrypt personal data. It affects the configuration of stored files making them totally inaccessible. This means any attempts to open the files will be denied due to encryption. Besides configuration changes, Pagar Ransomware alters data by visual means as well – by assigning the .pagar40br@gmail.com extension to each file under encryption. For instance, a file like 1.pdf
will change to 1.pdf.pagar40br@gmail.com
and reset its original icon to blank. After all files end up encrypted, Pagar creates a ransom note called Urgent Notice.txt, which explains how to recover the data.
Your files have been encrypted
You have 72 hours to transfer 0.035 BTC to wallet: 1Faiem4tYq7JQki1qeL1djjenSx3gCu1vk
Once paid, send your wallet address and the following ID to: pagar40br@gmail.com
and tell us your unique ID:-.
Ransomware developers are being concise and say you have 72 hours to send 0.035 BTC to the attached wallet. Right after completing the payment, victims should contact developers via pagar40br@gmail.com attaching their own wallet address and unique ID (written in the note). Unfortunately, there is zero information on whether Pagar developers can be trusted. There is a chance they will fool you and do not send any recovery tools even after performing the payment. To avoid this risk, it is better to recover your data using your own backup copies, if they were created and kept on external storage. Alternatively, you can use third-party decryption tools listed in our guide, but there is no guarantee they will recover all of your data if any. You should give it a try in case you have no other options remaining. Before running any data decryption or recovery, it is important to delete the virus from your system completely. To do this, follow our tutorial below.
How Pagar Ransomware infected your computer
Infections of this type are keen on abusing e-mail spam methods in most cases. Sometimes ransomware developers refer to hacking unprotected RDP configuration, spreading trojans, backdoors, keyloggers, fake software cracking tools, unreliable updates, pirated programs, and other content from unofficial resources. E-mail spam is usually letters containing malicious attachments links leading to fake download pages. Such attachments are often MS Office documents, PDFs, Executable, or JavaScript files altered to spread various malware. Once initiated, they are like to release the script that installs a malicious program. Website links work quite the same way, but only after users download software imposed on the page. Other distribution channels mentioned above also capitalize on users’ inexperience and negligence. To minimize and eradicate the risk of getting infected with ransomware completely, users should use only trusted and official downloads, avoid cracking tools, suspicious advertisements, and various websites that can distribute malicious software. How to protect computer from viruses, like Pagar Ransomware, in future
1. Get special anti-ransomware software
Use ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware
Famous antivirus brand ZoneAlarm by Check Point released a comprehensive tool, that will help you with active anti-ransomware protection, as an additional shield to your current protection. The tool provides Zero-Day protection against ransomware and allows you to recover files. ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware is compatible with all other antiviruses, firewalls, and security software except ZoneAlarm Extreme (already shipped with ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware) or Check Point Endpoint products. The killer features of this application are: automatic file recovery, overwrite protection that instantly and automatically recovers any encrypted files, file protection that detects and blocks even unknown encryptors.
2. Back up your files
As an additional way to save your files, we recommend online backup. Local storage, such as hard drives, SSDs, flash drives, or remote network storage can be instantly infected by the virus once plugged in or connected to. Pagar Ransomware uses some techniques to exploit this. One of the best services and programs for easy automatic online backup is iDrive. It has the most profitable terms and a simple interface. You can read more about iDrive cloud backup and storage here.
3. Do not open spam e-mails and protect your mailbox
Malicious attachments to spam or phishing e-mails are the most popular method of ransomware distribution. Using spam filters and creating anti-spam rules is good practice. One of the world leaders in anti-spam protection is MailWasher Pro. It works with various desktop applications and provides a very high level of anti-spam protection.
