What is RedRum Ransomware
RedRum Ransomware is a malicious piece that encrypts your data and demands to pay a ransom. Once the penetration reaches success, all stored data including images, videos, and text files will be encrypted with .redrum or .grinch (another version of RedRum family) extension. Case in point, if 1.mp4 got attacked by this virus, it will transform itself into 1.mp4.redrum or 1.mp4.grinch. As soon as encryption completes, RedRum will drop a text file (decryption.txt) with ransom information.

According to the note provided by RedRum, you should pay for the decryption key. For this, you are purposed to send them an e-mail message and get further instructions. Unfortunately, ransomware is indeed very stubborn and does not give any sign of relief due to strong algorithms that make the decryption process almost impossible. However, you should certainly remove it from your PC to protect other files and apply all of the necessary measures to no let it happen again.
How RedRum Ransomware infected your computer
Extortionists can unlock the gates to your system in multiple ways. First and most topical one stands for malicious e-mail messages that contain fake attachments. MS Office documents, PDFs, executables, JavaScript files, and others can be used by cybercriminals to cover integrated malware and spread its roots after file opening. Furthermore, the infection circle increases with other methods like trojans, keyloggers, abuse of unprotected RDP configuration, backdoors, and other cracks in cybersecurity that can be exploited badly. To get your files back, you will presumably need a backup in case it was created before the encryption. In this article, you will learn the most efficient methods of recovering data after such consequences.

How to protect computer from viruses, like RedRum Ransomware, in future
1. Get special anti-ransomware software
Use ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware
Famous antivirus brand ZoneAlarm by Check Point released a comprehensive tool, that will help you with active anti-ransomware protection, as an additional shield to your current protection. The tool provides Zero-Day protection against ransomware and allows you to recover files. ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware is compatible with all other antiviruses, firewalls, and security software except ZoneAlarm Extreme (already shipped with ZoneAlarm Anti-Ransomware) or Check Point Endpoint products. The killer features of this application are: automatic file recovery, overwrite protection that instantly and automatically recovers any encrypted files, file protection that detects and blocks even unknown encryptors.
2. Back up your files
As an additional way to save your files, we recommend online backup. Local storages, such as hard drives, SSDs, flash drives or remote network storages can be instantly infected by the virus once plugged in or connected to. RedRum Ransomware uses some techniques to exploit this. One of the best services and programs for easy automatic online backup is iDrive. It has the most profitable terms and simple interface. You can read more about iDrive cloud backup and storage here.
3. Do not open spam e-mails and protect your mailbox
Malicious attachments to spam or phishing e-mails is most popular method of ransomware distribution. Using spam filters and creating anti-spam rules is good practice. One of the world leaders in anti-spam protection is MailWasher Pro. It works with various desktop applications, and provides very high level of anti-spam protection.
